Mid-Ulster MLAs call for restricted speed limits
Thursday, 25 September 2008
SINN FEIN MLAs for Mid-Ulster, Francie Molloy and Michelle O'Neill have this week called on the Assembly to introduce a 20mph restricted limit as part of a broader package of traffic calming measure in the vicinity of schools.
Speaking before Tuesday's Assembly debate (today), Francie Molloy MLA said: "The safety of our children is of paramount importance. Driving even at 30mph in an area where children are getting in and out of cars and crossing roads on their journey to and from school is simply too fast. Here in Mid Ulster, we are a predominately rural constituency and many of our schools, particularly primary schools are situated along busy roads where the speed limit is currently 60mph."
The motion put forward by the Sinn Féin representatives reads:
“That this Assembly calls on the Minister for Regional Development to consider introducing a 20mph restricted speed limit as part of a broader package of traffic calming measures in the vicinity of schools."
Michelle O'Neill MLA who was one of the proposers of the motion said:
“This is an issue of concern for parents and schools right across the six counties; we in Sinn Féin believe that measures such as this can proactively help to save lives. I would hope that the other political parties agree with this stance and I would call on them to support the motion before the Assembly today."
“Not only does the current speed limit in operation close to our rural schools increase the potential dangers to our children but it also prevents any form of traffic calming measures being implemented. We urge all MLA's to support this motion and enhance the safety of all our children."
