SIX local stars of education have had their achievements recognised at the 2008 Teaching Awards ceremony in Northern Ireland.
Two weeks ago we reported that an amazing five teachers from Mayogall Primary School, Knockloughrim, had been shortlisted for awards at the ceremony.
The highlight for the school was Mrs Ciara O'Neill winning the BT Award for 'teacher of the year in a primary school', while three colleagues, Mrs Caroline McLean, Mrs Ciara McDonald and governor Mr Harry O'Loan all received distinctions at the prodigious ceremony.
Sokesperson for the school Kathy Donaghy said "This is a great day for St. Brigids, it is huge achievement for the five teachers involved, we are very proud of them."
“Being nominated by the pupils makes it extra special for the teachers involved" added Mrs Donaghy. Mrs Kathy McNabb who also teaches at the school was awarded a commendation for outstanding new teacher. Fiona o'Hagan who teaches at St. Johns Primary in Swatragh also received a commendation for teaching assistant of the year.
Every year, all 29,000 schools across England, Wales and Northern Ireland are invited to nominate their most outstanding school governors, headteachers, teachers and teaching assistants.
Anyone, parents, pupils, colleagues, governors, can make a nomination online at www.teachingawards.com.
