ST PIUS X College U-14 camogs claimed the County Derry vocational cup for only the second time in their history after an epic battle with St Colm's Draperstown last Thursday.
Both teams reached the final after topping their sections in the round robins held a few weeks ago. St Pius came through with victories against St Patrick's Dungiven, St Mary's Clady and St Paul's Kilrea to set up a mouth watering final with St Colm's.
Most spectators will agree that the final was an exhilarating and exciting game of camogie to watch with two evenly matched teams fighting for every ball. St Colm's playing with the wind in the first half took an early advantage with two goals in quick succession.
St Pius fought back hard and following a few close calls Chloe Bell hand-passed the ball over the heads of the defence to Aimee Devlin who duly blasted the ball to the net from a tight angle.
The St Pius girls really stepped up a gear in the second half with the defence holding a very dangerous looking St Colm's forward line scoreless. Aided by the breeze Maggie O'Hagan, Niamh McGuckin and Laura Wylie were able to provide the full-forward line with plenty of ball but the St Colm's goalkeeper and full-back line must be commended for their resilience and sheer hard work for cutting out a series of scoring opportunities.
The persistence of the St Pius forward line eventually paid off when Lisa Robinson scooped up the ball on the twenty one yard line and soloed the ball past two defenders before calmly slotting the ball into the net.
At this point with the two teams level pegging it was anyone's game but the St Pius girls dug deep and their sheer grit and determination saw them score the winning goal with five minutes left on the clock.
There were scenes of jubilation at the final whistle as caption Laura Wilson accepted the cup on behalf of her team mates. Credit must go to St Colm's for their fighting spirit and to all players for their fair play and skill. Final score - St Pius Magherafelt 3-0 St Colm's Draperstown 2-0.
